Five-time Grammy award-winning American comedian and actor, Steve Martin, has lent his support to Jo Koy amidst the backlash the first-time Golden Globe Awards host has faced for his recent monologue. Martin, a three-time Academy Award host himself, defended Koy on the meta platform Threads, acknowledging the challenges of hosting live awards shows and expressing admiration for Koy’s efforts.

“I extend my appreciation to anyone brave enough to take the stage as a live awards show host. It’s an incredibly demanding job, not for the faint-hearted—I still vividly remember the nerves from my own stint in 2010,” Martin shared. “So, kudos to Jo Koy, who tackled one of the toughest gigs in show business, delivered hits and misses, showcased nimbleness, and now has 20 minutes of fresh material for his stand-up!”

Jo Koy, a 52-year-old American comedian, was announced as the host of the Golden Globe Awards on December 21, 2023.

In support of Koy, 78-year-old Martin is joined by fellow four-time Academy Award host Whoopi Goldberg. Addressing the challenging nature of hosting, Goldberg emphasized the brutality of such gigs, especially for those unfamiliar with the dynamics of the room. Expressing her fondness for Jo Koy’s comedic prowess, Goldberg remarked, “I love Jo Koy. He’s hilariously funny, and navigating these hosting roles is no easy feat, whether it’s the room or the jokes. I didn’t catch the performance, but I do know that he ranks among the best in the stand-up game—it’s a tough arena.”
