Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman to Lead in 'The War of the Roses' Remake

Disney’s Searchlight Pictures is gearing up to present a remake of the beloved 1989 film, “The War of the Roses,” entitled “The Roses,” with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman set to headline.

Currently in development, the film will be helmed by Jay Roach, a renowned comedy director known for his work on “Recount” and “Bombshell.” Adding to the talent pool, Tony McNamara, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Searchlight’s successful film “Poor Things,” will pen the screenplay for “The Roses,” drawing inspiration from Warren Adler’s 1981 novel.

The original movie, released over three decades ago, garnered acclaim for its portrayal of a tumultuous relationship, with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the lead roles. Now, this remake will feature the acclaimed actors Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Olivia Colman, who clinched the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 2018 film “The Favourite.”

The movie’s logline sets the stage:

Life appears idyllic for the seemingly perfect couple, Theo (portrayed by Cumberbatch) and Ivy (played by Colman) – successful careers, loving children, and an enviable intimacy. Yet, beneath the veneer of domestic bliss lies a powder keg of rivalry and bitterness, primed to explode when Theo’s professional aspirations come crashing down.

Who are the producers of the film?

Benedict Cumberbatch is producing the film through his production company, SunnyMarch, while Olivia Colman is also onboard as a producer under the South of the River banner.

What was “The War of the Roses” about?

Directed by Danny DeVito, “The War of the Roses” chronicles the dissolution of the marriage between Oliver and Barbara Rose. Initially, their life together seems perfect, but when Barbara realizes she no longer loves her husband, the divorce proceedings spiral into a bitter battle of wits and wills. Cumberbatch and Colman will step into these roles for the remake.
