One of the significant Netflix undertakings slated for 2023, “Dumb Money,” is set to debut on January 21, 2024, for streaming audiences in both the United States and India.
Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film delves into the narrative of Keith Gill, an individual who astutely observed the downward trajectory of GameStop’s stock amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Gill candidly shared his insights through a live stream on YouTube and posts on the subreddit r/WallStreetBets, where he openly discussed his stock strategies and asserted that GameStop was undervalued. Initially investing $53,000 in GameStop’s stock at $5 per share, Gill’s influence led many of his viewers and followers to follow suit, rapidly escalating the stock’s value to an astonishing $483 in January 2021.
Noteworthy is Gill’s reported profit of $9 million within two days, culminating in a total profit of $48 million from the stock. The star-studded cast of the movie includes Paul Deno, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley, and Seth Rogen, with a theatrical release on September 15, 2023.
It’s important to highlight that Netflix holds an agreement with Sony’s first window for all titles in 2023. Sony movies are subsequently released on Netflix US and remain available for 18 months. While the general timeline for a movie to transition from theaters to Netflix is approximately 120 days, this duration is subject to variation.
Netflix India, akin to the US and several other regions such as Asia, Europe (including Germany and the Netherlands), releases movies with a slight delay. For viewers in the United Kingdom, the arrival of “Dumb Money” is anticipated in 2025. In contrast, audiences in Canada and Latin America will experience a more extended waiting period, with the movie expected to be available in 2026, approximately three years after its theatrical release.
