Foamstars, Inspired by Splatoon, Set for PS Plus Release on February 6Foamstars, Inspired by Splatoon, Set for PS Plus Release on February 6

Square Enix’s upcoming multiplayer game, Foamstars, is set to launch on PlayStation on February 6. Much like Fall Guys, Foamstars will be offered as a complimentary download for PlayStation Plus subscribers throughout February. The PlayStation blog has officially confirmed that Square Enix will grant free access to subscribers from February 6th to March 4th. The game will be accessible to PS Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium subscribers, who can download it at no additional cost. However, non-subscribers will need to purchase Foamstars from the PlayStation Store for $29.99 after March 5, and a PlayStation Plus membership will be required.

Foamstars stands out as a 4v4 shooter game, drawing parallels to Nintendo’s Splatoon. However, Foamstars places a greater emphasis on teamwork, requiring players to collaborate and leverage each other’s strengths to overcome opponents. The game features various modes, including Rubber Duck Party, Mission Mode, and Squad Mission. Regular free updates are promised, with each season offering an optional pass priced at $5.99. These passes will introduce new cosmetics, characters, and modes. The primary objective in Foamstars is for players to cover the play area with their team’s color, providing advantages to teammates and impeding opponents. Notably, Foamstars distinguishes itself from Splatoon with its use of 3D foam matter.

Square Enix has also disclosed that Toylogic, the game developer, employed the generative AI program Midjourney to incorporate AI-generated illustrations into the game. According to a statement from Square Enix, “AI was utilized in creating in-game album covers for Foamstars’ soundtrack.” They elaborated, “We experimented with Midjourney, using simple prompts to generate abstract images. We were impressed with the results and utilized them as the final album covers that players will encounter in the game. The remainder of the content was exclusively crafted by our development team.”
