Hulu's 'Death and Other Details' Canceled After Debut Season

Hulu’s murder mystery drama “Death and Other Details” has unfortunately been axed from the network’s lineup following its first season of ten episodes, as confirmed by Variety. Starring Mandy Patinkin and Violett Beane, the show aired its final episode just under a month ago.

Despite receiving decent critical acclaim, the series penned by Mike Weiss and Heidi Cole McAdams failed to secure a spot in Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming ratings.

Patinkin portrayed Rufus Cotesworth, once hailed as “the world’s greatest detective,” alongside Beane as his protégée, Imogene Scott. Together, they embarked on a journey to unravel a murder mystery that proved to be far from straightforward.

Set amidst the opulence of an ocean liner teeming with affluent and influential figures, the investigation leads the detectives to cross paths with a formidable and perilous adversary, Victor Sams, who harbors animosity towards the wealthy passengers.

“Death and Other Details” featured a cast of notable actors in pivotal roles, including Lauren Patten, Rahul Kohli, Angela Zhou, Hugo Diego Garcia, Pardis Saremi, and Linda Emond, with Jayne Atkinson making recurring appearances.

Despite expressing their hopes for a second season following the premiere of the inaugural season’s final episode, the show’s creators hinted at a potential shift in focus. Speaking with TheWrap, Heidi Cole McAdams suggested that the next season could center on Violett Beane’s Imogene Scott taking the lead, emphasizing a departure from the Agatha Christie-inspired format of the first season.

McAdams remarked, “I don’t believe each season of the show will replicate a fresh Agatha Christie narrative. We adopted that framework because it resonated with Rufus Cotesworth’s background. Should we have the fortune to continue, each year will offer a distinct perspective, I believe… Certainly, there will be more intrigue if we’re fortunate enough to proceed.”

Co-creator Mike Weiss also pondered on potential inspirations for a second season, asking, “We’ve been talking about what would it look like in Season 2 if we were inspired by Sherlock Holmes?”
