The ‘Three-Body Problem’ stands as a literary masterpiece penned by the accomplished Chinese science fiction writer, Liu Cixin. Serving as the inaugural installment in the Remembrance of Earth trilogy, this novel garnered recognition as the preeminent Chinese science fiction work of the past two decades upon its 2008 release. Liu Cixin received the prestigious Galaxy Award in acknowledgment of his exceptional contribution to the genre. Notably, the narrative has now been adapted for the screen by Netflix, with the collaborative efforts of DB Weiss and David Benioff, renowned for their work on ‘Game of Thrones,’ along with Alexander Woo, a notable figure from ‘True Blood.’
Recently unveiled at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Netflix has shared the trailer for ‘3 Body Problems,’ slated for release on March 21. The 2-minute and 36-second preview unveils a riveting storyline where a pivotal decision made by a woman in the 1960s induces chaos in the fabric of time and space. In response, five scientists join forces to address this existential threat and safeguard humanity. The cast includes John Bradley portraying Jack Rooney, Eiza Gonzalez as Auggie Salazar, Alex Sharp embodying Will Downing, Jovan Adepo in the role of Saul Durand, and Jess Hongs portraying Jin Heng—all integral members of the Oxford Science Group. Benedict Wong also features in the series as Da Shi, an officer tasked with investigating the mysterious deaths of scientists.
Expressing the team’s aspirations, Alexander Woo stated, “Our aim is to capture the essence, if not the precise details, of the novel on screen.” He emphasized preserving the novel’s sense of wonderment and vast scope, where challenges transcend individual or national boundaries, becoming issues of global significance. Additionally, Netflix has introduced a guide to assist viewers in identifying the actors in their respective roles. Noteworthy is the fact that this project marks the first collaboration between Weiss and Benioff since the conclusion of ‘Game of Thrones’ in 2019, culminating after eight successful seasons.
