New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear on Thursday the petition to reconsider the quantum of penalty for Cricketer-changed-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, which was issued in 2018 with a fine of ₹ 1,000 in the case of the 1998 street anger.
The reserve of Judge Am Khanwilkar and Sanjay Kiswil Kaul, who issued a notice to the Head of the Punjab Congress in September 2018, would consider the review petition submitted by a family member of Patiala residents who lost their lives in an anger incident. Sidhu had hit a 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in his head during a car park on December 1988. Sidhu said he died of a heart attack.
The bench issued a notification to Navjot Singh Sidhu in 2018 in a petition by the victim’s family, and explained that it would only take it on a limited problem from the quantum of punishment.
In May 2018, The Top Court put aside the orders of the Punjab High Court and Haryana sentenced Sidhu murder guilty and gave him a three-year prison position. It frees the MLA congress from the grave allegations but declare him guilty of mild violations that cause injured under section 323 from the Criminal Code.
Under Section 323, Sidhu was sentenced to fine ₹ 1,000. The maximum sentence below section 323 (voluntarily causing injury) IPC is a one-year prison period or fine ₹ 1,000.
The results of the petis review, however, cannot have an impact on Sidhu’s political career because, under the representation of the People’s Law, it is only a prison department two years or more that can cause disqualification of MP sitting or MLA. Therefore, even if Sidhu has a maximum prison department below the current accusation, he will not be disqualified from holding his office if he was re-elected as MLA in the upcoming poll in Punjab.
Sidhu is MLA sitting from the eastern seat of Amritsar and has filed his nomination paper from the same seats. Shiromani Akali Dal has lowered the former Minister of Punjab Bikram Singh Majithia against him from this constituency.
