The End of Team Fortress: Source 2 Fan Project Under Valve's DirectiveThe End of Team Fortress: Source 2 Fan Project Under Valve's Directive

The development team associated with Team Fortress: Source 2, Amper Software, has recently declared the cessation of their fan project endeavors, following a “cease and desist” directive from the Valve Corporation. Originating from enthusiasts of Valve’s multiplayer first-person shooter, Team Fortress 2, Amper Software was founded in 2021 by a group of over 20 developers who sought to modify the game. Over the past three years, their collective efforts focused on adapting the 17-year-old game for the Source 2 engine, with the aim of revitalizing its player base.

Initial success marked this undertaking, garnering praise on social media for the enhanced version. Although the development team temporarily halted their work on the project in September, there was a desire to resume. Unfortunately, any prospect of continuing development has been permanently quashed by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Amper Software officially announced the conclusion of Team Fortress: Source 2 on both the X platform and the Team Fortress Source 2 Discord server. Valve’s DMCA notice prompted the closure of the entire GitHub repository. Notably, the Nintendo 64 rendition of Portal, named Portal 64, also faced termination after the release of the “First Slice.”

The official X account of Team Fortress: Source 2, under the username @TeamFortressS2, conveyed the decision, stating, “While discussing the project’s future internally, we concluded to cease development due to the current state of the code being unusable with s&box’s recent major engine changes. We’ve also moved on from it.” The corresponding X thread conveyed, “Regrettably, this DMCA takedown is the final blow. We cannot resurrect it, and Valve’s attention has been drawn. It appears they explicitly disapprove of the usage of their intellectual property (which is well within their rights). Amper sincerely appreciates the support and enthusiasm received over the last three years. It has been an honor to advance this project alongside the incredible team and community. We are profoundly thankful for your unwavering support.”
