Pop sensation Usher pleasantly stunned his fans when he tied the knot with his longtime partner, Jennifer Goicoechea. In an interview with ET, the eight-time Grammy winner revealed that not only did his marriage catch his fans off guard, but it also came as a surprise to his own family.
Following his recognition as the Entertainer of the Year at the 55th annual NAACP Image Awards, Usher seized the moment to shed light on his union with 40-year-old Jennifer. Despite their engagement, Usher confessed that it was difficult for his family to digest the news of their impending nuptials.
Reflecting on the special occasion, the singer shared,
“It was an unforgettable moment that felt right for us. It marked the culmination of an amazing stint in Las Vegas. My mother, her mother, the kids, and our closest family were all present. To be honest, everyone was taken aback. I insisted, ‘No, we’re getting married right here, right now. Let’s have Elvis officiate.'”
Mere hours after Usher’s electrifying performance at Super Bowl LVIII in Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, the couple exchanged vows.
Notably, at the NAACP Image Awards, Usher not only clinched the Entertainer of the Year accolade but also received the prestigious President’s Award.
This distinguished honor recognizes outstanding individuals for their noteworthy contributions to society. Prior recipients include luminaries such as Gabrielle Union-Wade, Dwyane Wade, Rihanna, LeBron James, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, and Muhammad Ali.
In his acceptance speech for the President’s Award, Usher made sure to express his gratitude to his pillars of support. The 45-year-old songster remarked,
“They say behind, beside, or with every strong man is an even stronger woman, and for that, I am grateful to my mother and my lovely wife, Jennifer, for always being there for me.”
