Apple and Google in Talks: Bringing Gemini AI to iPhones

A recent report from Bloomberg by Mark Gurman suggests a potential collaboration between Apple and Google to integrate Gemini AI features into iPhones. This collaboration could shed a positive light on Gemini, which has been embroiled in controversies over the past few months.

Gurman, citing anonymous sources, indicates that both companies are actively negotiating for Apple to license Gemini, Google’s suite of generative AI models. These models would power new features slated for the iPhone software later this year.

It’s noteworthy that Apple has been exploring various AI features for its upcoming iOS 18 operating system using its proprietary AI models. However, this reported deal could pivot the focus to integrating these features directly into the iPhone rather than relying on cloud-based solutions.

If the deal goes through, Apple devices could potentially gain access to generative AI capabilities such as image generation and essay writing, all initiated with a single prompt. Popular apps like Apple Music, Pages, and Keynote might integrate these generative AI features with the iOS 18 update.

Nevertheless, reports on the ongoing negotiations suggest that Apple’s in-house AI development may be lagging. During a call with analysts earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted at the vast potential for Apple in the realm of AI without delving into specifics.

The Bloomberg report highlights that Apple’s AI development efforts are currently not on par with those of Google and other industry players. While discussions between Apple and Google are ongoing, any official confirmation is not expected until June, typically when Apple makes major announcements at its Worldwide Developers Conference.

Additionally, apart from Google, Apple may also explore partnerships with other companies, such as OpenAI, to leverage generative AI capabilities.
